The low-pressure switch is a refrigerant-side safety control that protects your compressor from running on a low charge or restricted flow. Plumbed into the suction line, it opens the 24V control circuit the moment system pressure drops below its setpoint, shutting the compressor down before it's damaged by liquid slugging or loss of lubrication. When it fails or trips you'll notice the outdoor unit won't start, the compressor short-cycles, or the system locks out and blows warm air — often after a refrigerant leak or on a cold morning when suction pressure is naturally low. This OEM low-pressure switch is factory-calibrated to Carrier's cut-out and cut-in pressures for R-410A operation (a low-charge protection range in the neighborhood of ~22 psi open / ~50 psi close). It's an automatic-reset switch wired in series with the 24V control circuit, with a fitting and connection sized for the PH10JA cabinet. Setpoint accuracy is the entire job. A generic switch with sloppy calibration trips too early and causes nuisance lockouts, or too late and lets the compressor run starved and overheat. OEM switches are calibrated and tested to Carrier's exact thresholds and use a diaphragm rated for R-410A's higher operating pressures, so the protection actually protects.
