The dual run capacitor gives both the compressor and the condenser fan motor the phase shift they need to start and run efficiently. One can does two jobs — the HERM terminal feeds the compressor, the FAN terminal feeds the outdoor fan motor, and a common terminal ties to line. When it weakens or fails you'll hear a hum from the outdoor unit while the fan blade sits still, the compressor may strain to start and trip the breaker, or the unit blows warm air and short-cycles on its internal overload. A bulged, domed, or leaking can top is a dead giveaway. This OEM dual run capacitor is rated in microfarads (MFD/uF) for each leg — typically 40+5 uF — at 370 or 440 VAC, and held to a tight OEM tolerance of plus or minus 5%. The voltage rating must meet or exceed the original, and the MFD values must match exactly; a capacitor reading more than about 6% below its rated MFD should be replaced. Capacitance is everything here. Generic capacitors often carry plus or minus 10-15% tolerances, so a 40 uF generic can actually deliver anywhere from 34 to 46 uF. Wrong MFD on the HERM leg stresses the compressor windings, runs them hot, and shortens the life of the most expensive part in the system.
