The pressure switch is a safety device wired into the control circuit that monitors refrigerant pressure and opens to shut the compressor down before damage occurs. A high-pressure switch trips when discharge pressure spikes (dirty coil, failed fan, overcharge); a low-pressure switch trips on loss of charge or a frozen indoor coil. When the switch fails or its system condition is triggered, the most common homeowner symptom is a unit that short-cycles or won't run at all — the compressor starts then stops within seconds, or never engages, often with a fault code on the control board and no heating or cooling. This switch is a sealed snap-action design with a defined cut-out and cut-in (reset) pressure calibrated for this unit's R-410A circuit, with either a manual or automatic reset and quarter-inch spade terminals.
