The contactor is the electrically operated switch that feeds high-voltage power to the compressor and condenser fan motor whenever the thermostat calls for cooling. A 24V signal energizes its coil and pulls the contacts closed. When it fails, the outdoor unit does nothing on a cooling call — or the opposite, with contacts welded shut so the unit runs nonstop and won't shut off. Buzzing or chattering from the outdoor cabinet, pitted or blackened contacts, and a clicking that never results in the fan starting are all classic symptoms.
