The run capacitor is the small energy-storage can that gives your unit's blower motor — and on packaged equipment the condenser fan and compressor — the phase shift it needs to start and keep spinning. It holds a charge and releases it to the motor windings on every run cycle. When a capacitor weakens or fails, you'll notice the motor humming but not turning, a fan that needs a push to start, intermittent no-heat or no-cool calls, frequent breaker trips, or a hard clicking as the motor tries and fails to start.
