The hot surface igniter (HSI) is what lights the burners on your Carrier furnace. The control board sends voltage to the igniter, it glows white-hot, and the gas valve opens to ignite the burners. When it fails, you get the classic no-heat call: the inducer runs, you hear the gas valve click, but the burners never light — and after a few tries the furnace locks out.
