The hot surface igniter is the component that lights the burner gas at the start of every heating cycle. On a call for heat, the control board energizes the igniter until it glows bright orange, then opens the gas valve so the burners ignite. When the igniter fails, the most common symptom is no heat: you'll hear the draft inducer spin up and the gas valve click, but the burners never light, and after two or three tries the furnace locks out — often with the blower pushing cold air and the control board flashing an ignition-fault or lockout code. A cracked or aged element may glow weak and uneven instead of bright, causing delayed or rough ignition.
