The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms the burners actually lit. After ignition, the flame conducts a tiny electrical current (flame rectification) that tells the control board flame is present; if the board doesn't sense that current within a few seconds, it closes the gas valve for safety. The classic failure symptom is short-cycling: the furnace lights normally, then shuts off after about 3 to 7 seconds, tries again, and after a few attempts locks out. You'll notice intermittent heat or a furnace that 'won't stay lit.' Most failures come from oxidation buildup on the rod, but a cracked insulator or burned rod requires replacement.
