The flame sensor is the single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and proves to the control board that ignition actually happened. Through flame rectification it converts the burning gas into a tiny DC microamp signal. As the rod accumulates oxide or carbon, or simply ages, that signal falls below the board's minimum and the board closes the gas valve as a safety response.
