The pressure switch is the safety device that proves your Carrier PG9MAB furnace's inducer is actually pulling combustion air and venting flue gases before any gas is allowed to flow. It is a diaphragm switch connected by a rubber hose to the inducer housing; when the inducer creates the correct negative pressure (vacuum), the switch closes and lets the ignition sequence proceed. When it fails — or a vent or condensate line is blocked — the furnace runs the inducer but never ignites, short-cycles, or throws a 'pressure switch did not close' or 'stuck open/closed' flash code.
