The hot surface igniter is what lights the burners on your Carrier PG9MAB furnace. On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot and ignites the gas as the valve opens. Igniters are the single most common furnace failure because the element is brittle and degrades a little with every heating cycle. When it cracks or burns out, the furnace runs through its pre-purge, clicks the gas valve, but never lights — you get the inducer running and no heat, usually followed by a lockout flash code after three failed attempts.
