The pressure switch is a safety interlock that proves the inducer draft motor is actually moving combustion air before the furnace allows gas to flow. It senses the negative pressure (vacuum) created in the vent path; only when that vacuum is confirmed does the control board energize the igniter and gas valve. When this switch fails or its tubing clogs, your Carrier furnace will run the inducer but never light — you'll see the inducer hum, then the unit lock out, often with a flashing fault code and no heat on the coldest mornings.
