The flame sensor is the furnace's proof-of-fire device. After ignition, this single metal rod sits in the burner flame and uses flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny DC microamp current to ground, telling the control board a real flame is present so it keeps the gas valve open. When the rod oxidizes or carbons over, current drops below threshold and the board shuts the gas off as a safety response. The classic symptom: your Carrier furnace lights, burns for 3–7 seconds, then shuts down and repeats — short-cycling that never delivers sustained heat. This OEM sensor uses a Kanthal-grade alloy rod and porcelain insulator dimensioned to sit at the correct depth and position in the PG9MAB burner flame. A healthy circuit reads roughly 1–6 microamps DC in flame; anything under ~0.5 µA triggers lockout. The insulator's resistance to ground is what keeps that weak signal from leaking away — a cracked porcelain base is a common silent failure. Generic flame sensors often use a shorter or thinner rod that doesn't reach the hottest part of the flame, so the microamp signal stays marginal and you get intermittent dropouts that are maddening to diagnose.
