It works by flame rectification — the lit flame conducts a tiny DC microamp current to ground, telling the control board it's safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod gets coated with oxidation or white silica scale, that current drops and the board can no longer 'see' the flame. The classic symptom: the burners light for 3–7 seconds, then the gas valve snaps shut and the furnace short-cycles, usually locking out after three tries and leaving you with no heat.
