The hot surface igniter (HSI) is the part that physically lights your burners. On each call for heat the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot (1800-2500°F) so the gas valve can open onto a guaranteed ignition source. When the igniter cracks, erodes, or develops hairline fractures, it either fails to reach temperature or shatters on the next thermal cycle. Homeowners notice the inducer motor running, a few clicks, then nothing — no whoosh of ignition, no heat, and often a furnace that locks out after three failed tries.
