The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms that ignition actually occurred. It works by flame rectification: the lit flame conducts a tiny microamp current from the rod to ground, telling the control board real fire is present. When the rod's surface oxidizes with carbon and silica or the ceramic base cracks, the board can no longer "see" the flame and closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety response. Homeowners notice this as a furnace that lights for 3-7 seconds, shuts off, and re-tries — the classic short-cycle that ends in a hard lockout and no heat on the coldest mornings. This sensor uses a Kanthal/stainless rod rated for continuous flame-temperature exposure.
