The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and verifies that ignition actually happened. It relies on flame rectification: the lit flame passes a tiny microamp current from the rod to ground, signaling the control board that real fire is present so it can keep the gas valve open. As the rod oxidizes with carbon and silica buildup, or the ceramic insulator cracks, the board loses that signal and shuts the gas off within seconds for safety. Homeowners experience this as a furnace that ignites, runs for a few seconds, then drops out and re-tries — repeated short-cycling that ends in a hard lockout and no heat. This sensor uses a Kanthal/stainless rod built for continuous flame-temperature exposure. A healthy unit produces a flame signal of roughly 1.0-6.0 microamps DC; when the reading falls under about 0.5 µA the control declares loss of flame and locks out.
