The hot surface igniter is what actually lights your Carrier furnace. On a call for heat, the control board sends 120V to the igniter element, which glows white-hot (around 2000°F) and ignites the gas as the valve opens. It is the single most-replaced part in a modern gas furnace because the element is brittle and degrades with every heating cycle. When it fails, the burners never light: you'll hear the inducer motor spin up and the gas valve click, but get no flame, no heat, and often a hard lockout after three failed ignition attempts. A failing igniter may also glow dimly or show a visible crack. Specs: This OEM igniter uses a silicon carbide element (the standard for this Carrier platform) with the correct ceramic base, mounting-tab orientation, and wire harness/connector for a plug-and-play fit. A good silicon carbide igniter typically measures about 40-90 ohms cold; an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a reading far outside range indicates a cracked or burned-out element. Silicon nitride upgrades run hotter and last longer but require a matching board/gas-valve profile, so stick with the OEM-spec element. OEM vs Generic: Igniters are resistance-critical. An aftermarket element with the wrong resistance draws the wrong current — too high and it never reaches ignition temperature, too low and it burns out prematurely. Generic ceramics are also more fragile and crack from thermal shock. The OEM part is tuned to your board's ignition timing. Install (difficulty 2/5): Tools: 1/4" nut driver, clean gloves (never touch the element — skin oils cause hot spots), and a multimeter.
