This is the factory-specified OEM step-down control transformer for the Carrier PG9MAA060080AFKA gas furnace. The transformer converts 120V line voltage to the 24V AC that powers every low-voltage control component in your system — including the thermostat circuit, gas valve, inducer relay, and control board. When the transformer fails, nothing works: the thermostat goes blank, the furnace won't respond to a call for heat, and you may measure 0V between the R and C terminals on the control board.
