The hot surface igniter is the component that lights your Carrier furnace on every call for heat. The control board sends 120V to the element, which glows white-hot (roughly 2000°F) and ignites the gas the instant the valve opens. Because the element is brittle and stressed by thermal expansion on every cycle, it is the most commonly replaced part in modern gas furnaces. When it fails, the burners simply won't light — you'll hear the inducer spin and the gas valve click, but get no flame, no heat, and usually a hard lockout after three failed attempts.
