The hot surface igniter is what lights the burners on your Carrier PG9MAA packaged gas furnace. On each call for heat the control board sends 120V to the igniter, heating it to roughly 2,000°F so it can light the gas as the valve opens. Because it cycles to that temperature every single ignition, the igniter is the most common wear part in the heating sequence. When it fails you'll notice no heat despite the inducer and blower running, a furnace that clicks and tries repeatedly before locking out, or a cold unit after a power blip.
