The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the burners actually lit. It works by flame rectification — the lit burner conducts a tiny microamp DC current through the rod, telling the board to keep the gas valve open. If the board doesn't sense that current within a few seconds of ignition, it shuts the gas off for safety. When the sensor gets coated in oxide or carbon, that signal drops and you get the hallmark symptom: the furnace lights normally, burns for 3 to 7 seconds, then shuts off and tries again — short-cycling that repeats until the unit locks out.
