The hot surface igniter is what lights the burners on your Carrier PG9MAA package unit. At the start of each heat call the control board sends line voltage through the igniter, heating its tip to roughly 1,800–2,500°F so that when the gas valve opens, the burners ignite instantly. Igniters are the single most common no-heat failure: the element is brittle and degrades with every thermal cycle.
