The flame sensor is the safety device that confirms your Carrier PG9MAA burners actually lit. After ignition, the control board sends a small AC voltage down the sensor rod; the flame conducts a tiny microamp DC current back through the flame's ions (flame rectification). If the board doesn't see that current within a few seconds, it closes the gas valve to prevent raw gas from flooding the heat exchanger. When the sensor gets coated with oxidation or silica, that signal drops and the furnace short-cycles: burners light for 3–7 seconds, then shut off, often repeating several times before locking out and leaving you with no heat. This is a single-rod sensing electrode with a high-temperature ceramic insulator and the spade or ring terminal matched to the 9MAA harness. A healthy sensor should read a flame current of roughly 2–6 microamps DC; anything below about 1.0 µA will cause dropouts.
