The flame sensor is a slender metal rod that sits in the burner flame and verifies — through microamp flame rectification — that the gas has actually lit. As it accumulates white silica/oxide buildup or develops a fine crack, the control board loses its flame signal and closes the gas valve within seconds as a protective measure.
