The flame sensor is a single thin metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame. It produces no heat of its own — its only job is to confirm the burners actually lit by conducting a tiny microamp current through the flame back to the control board (flame rectification). When the rod gets coated with oxide and soot or its porcelain insulator cracks, the board can no longer "see" the flame, shuts the gas valve within a few seconds, and locks out. Homeowners typically notice the furnace firing for 2–5 seconds and then shutting off (short-cycling), repeated ignition attempts, intermittent no-heat on a call, and often a hard lockout after three failed tries. This OEM sensor uses a high-temp stainless/Kanthal rod with a ceramic insulator rated for continuous burner exposure. A healthy sensor reads roughly 1–6 microamps DC of flame current; once it drops below about 0.7 µA the board will drop the flame. The bracket, rod length, and spade terminal are matched to the PG9MAA burner assembly so the tip sits at the correct depth in the flame envelope. Rod position is everything. A generic sensor with a slightly different length or bend angle sits too shallow, producing a weak, drifting microamp signal that degrades into nuisance lockouts as the burner ages.
