The hot surface igniter is what actually starts your Carrier furnace each cycle. On a call for heat, the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot and lights the gas as it leaves the burners. When the igniter cracks or weakens, the furnace will try to light, fail, and lock out — usually after three retries.
