The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the burners actually lit. It works by flame rectification — a tiny microamp current passes from the rod through the flame to ground. When the rod oxidizes, carbons up, or cracks, the board can no longer "see" the flame and closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure. Homeowner symptoms: the furnace lights for 3–7 seconds then shuts off (short-cycling), repeated ignition retries, no heat, or a hard lockout error code after several failed tries.
