The flame sensor (flame-rectification rod) is the single metal rod mounted in the burner flame path of your Carrier PG96 gas furnace. After the igniter lights the burners, the control board pushes a tiny microamp current through the flame, and this sensor is what 'proves' the burners actually lit. When the rod oxidizes, carbons up, or cracks, the classic failure is a furnace that fires for 3–7 seconds and then shuts the gas off — over and over — because the board never sees a strong enough flame signal. After three or four failed tries it locks out, leaving you with no heat and often cold air from the registers. Specs: this is a single-rod sensor, not an igniter — it does NOT glow. It produces a flame-rectification signal typically in the 1–6 microamp range; once the reading falls below roughly 0.5–1.0 µA the board declares flame loss. The rod is a stainless/Kanthal alloy on a ceramic insulator with a specific length, bend, and mounting bracket so it sits in the hottest part of the flame envelope. Why OEM matters: a correct sensor has the right rod length, alloy, and bracket geometry to read a clean, strong microamp signal. Generic rods that are too short or made of thinner alloy sit at the cooler edge of the flame, read low, and cause the very intermittent lockouts you're trying to cure.
