The pressure switch is a safety interlock that proves your Carrier furnace's draft inducer is actually moving combustion air before the board allows ignition. It senses the negative pressure (vacuum) created by the inducer through a small hose; only when the correct vacuum is present do its contacts close and let the heat sequence proceed. When it fails — or the vent or hose is blocked — the furnace won't fire at all: the inducer spins up but the burners never light, and most boards flash a specific pressure-switch fault code.
