The pressure switch is the safety interlock that proves your Carrier furnace's induced-draft blower is actually moving air and venting combustion gases before the control board allows ignition. It is a diaphragm switch connected by a small hose to the inducer housing; when the inducer spins up and creates the correct negative draft, the diaphragm pulls the contacts closed and the ignition sequence proceeds. If the switch fails, or if a blocked vent, plugged condensate trap, or weak inducer prevents proper draft, the contacts never close. The homeowner symptom is a furnace that starts its sequence — you hear the inducer spin — then locks out with no heat and a flashing fault code, most often in the coldest weather when condensate freezes.
