The flame sensor is the small rectification rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the burners actually lit. It does no heating itself — it simply passes a tiny electrical current through the flame so the furnace knows it is safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod corrodes, cracks, or carbons over, that signal drops out: the burners light for a few seconds and then snuff out, the furnace short-cycles, you hear repeated clicking and ignition attempts, the blower runs cold, and after several failed tries the board drops into a hard lockout that leaves you with no heat at all.
