The hot surface igniter is the glow plug of your Carrier PG95XAT48100CAAA. On a call for heat the control board energizes it, it heats to roughly 2000-2500°F, and the gas valve opens to light the burners off its glowing tip. Igniters are the single most common failure point in a 95% furnace because that constant thermal cycling eventually fractures the element. When it fails you get no heat: the inducer and blower may run but the burners never light, and the board flashes an ignition-lockout fault after three tries.
