The pressure switch is a safety interlock that proves the inducer motor is actually pulling combustion air and venting flue gases before your Carrier Performance 95 is allowed to ignite. As the inducer spins up it creates a negative pressure that closes the switch contacts; only then does the control board permit the igniter and gas valve to fire. When the switch sticks, drifts out of calibration, or its hose clogs, the furnace will not start — you'll typically hear the inducer run for several seconds and then shut down, with the board throwing a pressure-switch fault and the furnace locking out. This is also one of the first things to fail after a blocked flue, a kinked sensing hose, or a clogged condensate trap on a 95% unit. This OEM switch is a normally-open diaphragm switch factory-set to the trip point this furnace requires — generally in the −0.40" to −1.10" W.C. range depending on stage — with the correct port size and hose barb to match the Carrier inducer housing.
