The flame sensor is a single metal rod that tells your Carrier Performance 95 furnace whether a flame is actually present after the igniter fires. Through flame rectification it passes a small microamp current through the burner flame to the control board; if that current isn't detected within a few seconds, the board treats it as a no-flame condition and shuts the gas valve for safety. As the rod gets dirty, corroded, or fatigued, the telltale symptom is short-cycling — the burners light, hold for only 3 to 7 seconds, then drop out, repeating until the furnace locks out and the house goes cold. The control board will usually flash a flame-sense or 'flame not detected' fault code while this happens. This OEM sensor uses a Kanthal/stainless sensing rod with a high-temperature ceramic insulator built to sit in the flame continuously. A good installed rod reads roughly 1 to 6 microamps DC; once the signal sags below about 0.5 µA it needs cleaning or replacement.
