The flame sensor is your Carrier PG95SAS24026ABAA furnace's proof-of-flame safety device. Once the burners light, this thin metal rod sits in the flame and uses flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp DC current — to tell the control board that gas is actually burning. When the sensor is dirty or failing, the board can't 'see' the flame, so it shuts the gas valve within 2–4 seconds as a safety measure. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the burners light, run for a couple of seconds, then shut off, repeating until the furnace locks out. You get little or no heat even though ignition clearly happens. Electrically this is a single-rod rectification sensor wired to the integrated furnace control.
