The flame sensor is the safety device that proves a flame is actually present at the burners during the heating cycle. Using a principle called flame rectification, the rod conducts a tiny DC current through the flame back to the control board; if that current isn't detected, the board assumes ignition failed and shuts off the gas. When the sensor gets coated with oxide and silica buildup or weakens with age, your furnace will light, run for 3 to 7 seconds, then drop out — the classic short-cycle. After three or four failed tries the board goes into hard lockout and you get no heat at all. This OEM Carrier sensor uses a Kanthal/stainless steel rod calibrated for this furnace's microamp signal range (typically 1–6 µA DC at the board). A healthy clean rod holds that signal steady; a contaminated or out-of-spec rod drops below the board's threshold. Why OEM matters here: generic rods often use thinner or shorter elements and inconsistent alloys that read low or drift, so the furnace nuisance-trips even when the flame is fine. The correct OEM length and tip geometry keep the rod seated in the flame envelope for a strong, stable signal. Install difficulty: 2 of 5.
