The flame sensor proves to the control board that a flame is actually burning at the burners once the gas valve opens. It works by flame rectification: the rod passes a microscopic DC current through the flame, and if the board doesn't see that current it cuts the gas within seconds as a safety. As the rod accumulates oxide and silica scale — or simply ages — the signal weakens. The furnace then lights, burns for a few seconds, and shuts off, cycling like this three or four times before going into hard lockout and leaving you with cold air from the registers. This OEM Carrier sensor uses the correct Kanthal/stainless rod length and tip geometry for the PG92 platform, calibrated to the board's microamp window (commonly 1–6 µA DC). A clean, in-spec rod holds a strong steady signal; a worn or wrong-length rod reads low and trips the safety even when combustion is healthy.
