The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the gas actually ignited. It works by flame rectification — the lit flame conducts a tiny DC current (microamps) from the rod to ground, telling the board it is safe to keep the gas valve open. When the sensor is dirty, cracked, or worn, the furnace will light normally and then shut the gas off within a few seconds because the board no longer 'sees' a flame. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the burners ignite, run briefly, drop out, retry several times, and finally lock out into a no-heat fault.
