The flame sensor is a single metal rod positioned in the burner flame whose only job is to prove the furnace has actually ignited. It senses the flame by rectification — a small microamp DC current flows through the live flame back to the control board. As the rod oxidizes or builds carbon, that current drops until the board can no longer confirm flame. The hallmark symptom is a furnace that lights for a few seconds, then cuts the gas and short-cycles, repeatedly igniting and dying. Homeowners see intermittent or no heat, burners that flash on then go out, and frequently a lockout after several failed tries.
