The flame sensor verifies that your Carrier PG92SAS42100CAAA furnace actually lit after the gas valve opened. It works by flame rectification: the metal rod sits in the burner flame, and the ionized flame conducts a tiny DC current back to the control board, proving combustion. If the board doesn't sense that current within a few seconds, it shuts the gas valve as a safety measure.
