The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification — the ionized flame conducts a tiny microamp current that the board reads. If the board doesn't sense that current within a few seconds of opening the gas valve, it shuts the valve for safety. When the sensor gets coated with oxide or carbon, the symptom is unmistakable: the furnace lights, burns for 3–7 seconds, then shuts off and short-cycles, often retrying several times before a hard lockout. This is a Kanthal-style sensing rod with the correct ceramic insulator and bracket geometry for the PG92 burner assembly. A healthy sensor reads a flame-rectification current in roughly the 2–6 microamp range; below about 1.5 µA the board will drop the flame. The rod and insulator are sized so the tip sits correctly in the flame envelope. Why OEM matters here: rod length, position, and insulator quality determine how much flame current the sensor picks up. Generic sensors with slightly wrong geometry or cheaper insulators read low or leak current to ground, causing intermittent flame-loss lockouts that are maddening to diagnose.
