The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the burners actually lit. It works by flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp current the board listens for. When the rod gets coated in oxide and carbon, it can no longer sense the flame, so the board shuts the gas off within seconds as a safety measure. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the burners light, run for 3–7 seconds, then shut off, repeating until the furnace locks out. The result is little or no heat and a blower pushing cool air. Specs: A healthy flame sensor passes a microamp signal, typically 1–6 µA measured with a meter in series; below about 0.5 µA the board drops the flame and shuts down. It's a single-wire device — light surface oxide can be cleaned with fine steel wool or emery cloth, but a pitted rod or a cracked porcelain insulator means replacement.
