The pressure switch is the furnace's draft-proving safety device. Before the gas valve opens, the inducer motor pulls a vacuum that this switch must sense and confirm; only then will the control board allow ignition. When the switch fails or its sensing hose plugs with condensate or debris, the furnace will short-cycle, the inducer will spin without firing the burners, and you'll get cold air, frequent on-off cycling, or a steady fault-code LED flash on the control board. A stuck-closed switch is even more dangerous because it can defeat the venting safety check entirely. This is a negative-pressure switch with normally-open contacts that close on a vacuum, typically actuating around -0.50 to -0.65 inches of water column for this 80% single-stage cabinet. Carrier sets the trip point to match the inducer and vent length of your exact furnace; the port size, hose barb, and bracket are model-specific. OEM matters here more than almost any other part. A generic switch with the wrong actuation set point will either trip too early (nuisance no-heat lockouts) or too late (a real venting fault goes undetected). Aftermarket switches often carry wider WC tolerances and weaker diaphragms that drift over time.
