The run capacitor is the small cylindrical energy reservoir that gives the blower or inducer motor the phase-shifted boost it needs to start and to run smoothly under load. As the capacitor's microfarad (MFD) capacity drifts down with age and heat, the motor draws more current, runs hotter, and loses torque — so you'll hear a low hum at the motor, notice weak or no airflow, find the blower won't start until you spin it by hand, or trip the furnace breaker. A bulged or leaking top is a sure sign it's done. Capacitors are rated in MFD and voltage. For this furnace the motor capacitor is typically in the 5 to 10 MFD range at 370 or 440 VAC; the genuine Carrier part holds a tight ±5% tolerance so the motor sees exactly the capacitance it was engineered for.
