The flame sensor is a single stainless rod that sits in the burner flame and proves combustion through flame rectification — it lets a tiny microamp current pass through the flame to the burner ground. The control board reads that current and, if it doesn't see it within a few seconds of the gas valve opening, it shuts the gas off as a safety. When the rod is coated with oxide or carbon, that signal collapses: the furnace lights, burns for 3 to 5 seconds, then shuts down — and tries again and again until it locks out with no heat. This short flame-then-drop cycling is the textbook bad-flame-sensor symptom. Electrically the rod produces a small DC flame current, typically in the 1 to 6 microamp range, while most Carrier boards need at least roughly 0.5 to 1 µA to keep the valve open. The genuine sensor uses the correct rod alloy, length, and porcelain insulator so the tip lands in the right part of the flame for a strong, stable signal.
