The pressure switch is the safety device that proves your Carrier package unit's draft inducer is moving air before the burners are allowed to light. When the heat call starts, the inducer motor spins up and creates a negative pressure in the vent; this switch senses that vacuum through a small hose and closes its contacts to tell the control board the flue is clear. If the switch never closes — because of a blocked flue, a cracked hose, a weak inducer, or a failed switch — the board will not fire the igniter. The symptom is a furnace that runs the inducer, hums or clicks, then shuts down with no heat, often paired with a pressure-switch flash code on the board. This is a single-stage negative-pressure (vacuum) diaphragm switch with a factory-calibrated trip point measured in inches of water column (W.C.); the set point is printed on the body and is matched to this furnace's venting. It uses the same hose barb, mounting holes, and 1/4-inch spade terminals as the original. Why OEM matters: the trip pressure is model-specific. A generic switch with the wrong W.C. set point will either nuisance-trip on a perfectly good system or, worse, close too easily and defeat the very safety it exists to provide.
