Once the hot surface igniter glows and the gas valve opens, this thin metal rod sits in the burner flame and generates a tiny electrical current through flame rectification, telling the control board it is safe to keep gas flowing. When the rod becomes coated in oxide or carbon, that signal drops and the board can no longer see the flame. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the furnace ignites, runs for three to seven seconds, then shuts the gas off and tries again, leaving you with little or no heat and a blower pushing cool air.
