The hot surface igniter is the glow element that lights the burners on every heat call. When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot and lights the gas the instant the valve opens. Igniters are brittle and fail from repeated thermal cycling — they crack, develop hairline fractures, or simply burn through. When that happens the furnace will run its inducer and blower but never light, so you get cold air or no air at all, often after an audible click with no "whoosh" of ignition. A furnace that locks out after three failed ignition attempts is the classic symptom of a dead igniter. Carrier furnaces in this family use a hot surface igniter, offered in legacy silicon carbide and modern silicon nitride. Silicon nitride elements are far more durable and resist the thermal-shock cracking that kills silicon carbide igniters. Cold resistance typically falls in the 40–75 ohm range for carbide elements and lower for nitride; the OEM part is matched to the board's voltage and current limits so it reaches ignition temperature within the trial-for-ignition window. A generic igniter with the wrong resistance won't glow hot enough — or fast enough — to light the gas inside the board's timed window, causing repeated lockouts even when the part is brand new. Under-spec elements also draw incorrect current and shorten relay life on the control board.
