The run capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to keep the unit's blower motor — and on packaged units the condenser fan and compressor — running smoothly and efficiently. It supplies the phase shift the motor needs to maintain torque under load. As a capacitor ages it loses capacitance (measured in MFD, or microfarads), and the motor then struggles to start and run. Symptoms include a blower that hums but won't spin up, a motor that starts only when nudged by hand, weak airflow and warm air, frequent breaker trips, and on packaged units a compressor that hums but won't start. A bulging, leaking, or domed capacitor top is a sure sign of failure. This is an OEM run capacitor rated to the exact MFD and voltage (370 or 440 VAC, matched to the motor) Carrier specifies for this unit. OEM tolerance is held to ±5%, so the motor receives the correct phase current. Dual-round capacitors carry two ratings on one can (for example 35/5 MFD) for the blower/fan and the compressor — always match both the MFD values and the voltage printed on your existing cap's label.
